NIV team visits Kerala, collects samples to find source of Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode

A 12-year-old boy had died of Nipah infection in Kozhikode, Kerala. Pune’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) team visited the district on Saturday and collected samples from fruit-eating bats to find out the source of the disease. The NIV team had reached Kozhikode on Friday. The outbreak of Nipah virus infection cases has created panic among the people living there. On September 8, Kerala Health Minister Veena George had informed that a total of 68 people were put in isolation at the Government Medical College in Kozhikode district on suspicion of being infected with Nipah virus. A total of 251 persons were listed during contact tracing of the virus. Of these, 129 were healthcare workers and 54 people were in the high-risk category.
