Allahabad HC directs state govt to give 1 crore ex-gratia for death of polling officers due to COVID-19

The Allahabad High Court has said in a hearing that the compensation announced by the state government in the case of deaths of polling officers due to COVID-19 infection during Panchayat Election Duty is ‘insufficient’. The court directed the State Election Commission and the government to reconsider providing compensation of one crore each to the families of the deceased employees. The UP government had earlier informed the High Court that it has decided to provide Rs 30 lakh to the kins of the deceased employees as ex-gratia. So far, deaths of 77 polling officers have been reported in 28 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The next hearing will be conducted on May 17.
