Tokyo Olympics: India wins first medal, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu bags silver

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu gave India its first medal in the 49 kg category of women’s weightlifting on the first day of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. In her second clean and jerk attempt, Mirabai set a new Olympic record by lifting a total of 115 kg weight. However, this record did not last as China’s Hou Zhihui broke it in the next attempt by lifting weight of 116 kg. The President of India Ram Nath Kovind congratulated her on Twitter. He wrote, “Heartiest congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for starting the medal tally for India in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by winning silver medal in weightlifting.”
