Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have forged an alliance in Punjab ahead of the 2022 assembly elections in the state. Last year, SAD had cut ties with the BJP over the Centre’s controversial agriculture bills. SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, during the official announcement, said that in the upcoming assembly elections, BSP will contest on 20 seats and SAD on remaining 97 seats. Both the parties are forming alliance after 27 years. In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, their alliance had won 11 out of 13 seats in Punjab. The Mayawati-led BSP had then won three seats, while the Akali Dal had won eight out of 10 seats.
