Pegasus Project: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says illegal surveillance not possible

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw defended the central government during the monsoon session of Parliament today over the alleged Pegasus spyware reports. Denying the claims, he said that with the country’s laws and strong institutions of checks and balances, illegal surveillance of any kind is not possible. He added that India has a well-established process through which electronic communications are used lawfully for the purpose of national security. On Sunday, it was claimed that more than 300 authenticated phone numbers of two union ministers, three opposition leaders, over 40 journalists and many others were allegedly hacked in India with Pegasus spyware of Israeli company NSO Group.
