Black Fungus: India reports over 45K cases and 4,332 fatalities so far

The Union Health Ministry informed on Thursday that 45,374 cases of mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’ have been reported in the country so far. Whereas, 4,332 patients of this fungal infection have died across the country. Dr. Bharati Praveen Pawar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare while answering a question raised in the Rajya Sabha on Black Fungus disease, said, “The country has seen a decline in the cases of mucormycosis in the last two months.” Mucormycosis is caused by exposure to fungal spores prevalent in the environment. It can enter the skin through bites, scratches, burns or other types of skin trauma.
