Covaxin expected to receive WHO’s approval this week

India’s indigenous vaccine Covaxin may soon get the approval of the World Health Organization (WHO). According to sources, the Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech’s vaccine Covaxin developed with ICMR may get approved by WHO this week. In June, WHO had accepted Bharat Biotech’s EOI i.e. Expression of Interest for its approval. The emergency use of this vaccine has been approved by the Government of India and it has also been made available to the general public. However, this vaccine is not yet included in the WHO’s list of emergency use vaccines, due to which many countries have not approved the travel of people who have been administered Covaxin.
