On Wednesday, the American global aerospace company Northrop Grumman (NG) named their next Cygnus spacecraft after Indian-origin astronaut Dr. Kalpana Chawla. She was the first woman of Indian descent who went into the space. The company is set to launch this aircraft with the cargo at the International Space Station. S.S. Kalpana Chawla will be mounted atop the NG’s Antares rocket. On Tuesday, Northrop Grumman announced, “It is our tradition to name each Cygnus after an individual who has played an important role in human spaceflight”.
