‘Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020’ of the UP government against forceful religious conversions or ‘Love Jihad’ in the state has been approved by Governor Anandiben Patel. The ordinance has come into force from today. CM Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh cabinet had approved the ordinance to stop forceful or dishonest religious conversions on Tuesday. According to the ordinance, violators will be get a punishment of up to 10 years and the marriage will be declared “null and void” if the conversion of a woman is solely for that purpose. Those wishing to change their religion after marriage will need to apply to the district magistrate in advance.
