CBI lodges case against Cambridge Analytica for Facebook data theft

A case against the UK-based firm Cambridge Analytica has been registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for stealing data of 5.62 lakh Indian Facebook users. CBI has also initiated action against another UK company Global Science Research for data theft. In response to the agency’s queries, Facebook had revealed to the CBI that Global Science Research had illegally harvested personal data of 5.62 lakh Indian Facebook users and shared it with Cambridge Analytica, which used the data to influence the elections in India. In March 2018, several international media platforms had quoted former Cambridge Analytica employees, associates and documents as stating that the firm had collected personal information from Facebook profiles of more than 50 million users without their permission.
