On Thursday, Maharashtra government has decided to amend an Act for protection and conservation of trees in the state. This act will be called as Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. In this amendment, the act will classify 50-year-old trees as heritage, and will tighten the rules for felling of trees for development works. This will increase the number of trees to be planted instead of cutting it. On Wednesday, Maharashtra Cabinet approved this amendment which was sent by Environment and Climate Change Minister Aaditya Thackeray.
