Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today informed that currently there is no proposal to bring petrol, diesel, jet fuel and natural gas under GST. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman said on Moday that the GST Council will take a decision in this regard as per the GST Act. After the price of petrol reached Rs 100 per liter in some parts of the country, the demand to bring fuels under the purview of GST had started gaining momentum. If brought under goods and services tax (GST), Center and states will not be able to levy separate taxes for petrol and diesel. Currently, the state government levies VAT and the Central government levies excise duty on the fuel price leading to its rise periodically.
